I'm certainly not the first to do a "Dust and Dance" shoot, but overcome with desire to challenge my creativity, coupled with my passion for dance, I arranged this shoot in a studio. And I think we made magic.
I hope you'll enjoy these 5 insightful Things Dance Gave Me, and how they effect my photography.
1. Confidence
As a dancer you're instructed to lift your head up, look the audience in the eyes, exude energy, and smile. How can those instructions make you anything but confident? As you practice you perform, right? And so, in the practice of dance I have learned confidence in the performance of life. I use that confidence to encourage positive thinking in the creative process of photography, and am able to show leadership in my work.
2. Valued Friendship
These lasting friendships brought companionship, support and enrichment to my life. They helped me navigate social circumstances and identify elevating qualities I can provide. It's given me a base for the vision I can now turn into realities with my photography business. As a growing business owner I strive to be a friend to all. The greatest compliment I get is when people say, "I loved working with you!" It means more than the pictures I take. It means they enjoyed my presence, charisma and friendship. I just need to express my gratitude to all of you who have worked with me and given me valued friendship.
3. Discipline
Dance isn't all about fun. It takes preparation, focus, ambition and diligent determination. I learned about scheduling, and working in studio or on stage with groups of girls on many points. This included facilitating performance and practice organization as well as choreography direction. I focused on striving to achieve new or next level goals. I use these qualities to sharpen my techniques as an editor, photographer, mentor, creator, and business owner, keeping me disciplined and successful.
4. Physical, Mental and Emotional Health
Techniques that specially build proper body posture (of course it's horrible now), balance and flexibility, improved self-esteem, endurance, and healthy competition are a few of the many health benefits of dance. I am a woman whose life's in need of physical strength, emotional and mental well-being to prosper in my passion for pictures. <- like all the "P's?" Dance taught me all those benefits a while ago. I utilize healthful wisdom; when running to shoots, adjusting lighting, putting up backdrops, packing my gear, scheduling clients, hiring help, designing sets, calming stressful situations, satisfying customers, and even inputting accounting. And believe it or not, body posture, balance, flexibility, self-esteem, endurance, and competition are factors in that list. Health management is a big part of my job as a photographer, so, not one to be overlooked.
5. Creativity
Kinaesthetic performance and response helped me develope creative problem solving techniques, and critical thinking skills. It stimulated image-based creativity. It was a dream of mine. One of the many. I saw all the benefits; Confidence, Friendship, Discipline, Health, and Creativity.
I've chased many dreams as a young woman and there came a point in which I felt that I would never reach my potential. Dance Performance led to Professional Wrestling, which led to Management and now my true love Photography. Photography has not only kept me focused and determined, it has kept me stimulated and challenged, two of the things I need to thrive. I needed this shoot to express my gratitude for the way dance has moved my focus to photography and visions into realities.
