Houston Fairy Photoshoots | Capturing the Magic of Childhood
Do you know a little fairy?
Before we settle into adulthood, our imagination has the capacity to imagine things we’ve never seen before, even in great detail. It also has the ability to see things in a more fantastical yet innocent light. Have you ever asked a child a question so simple to which they answered with an elaborate story?
Think of imaginary friends, mermaids, and fairies; all as real to a child as the rest of what they see at their young age. This year I wanted to capture this magical setting through photographs and offer families the opportunity to have memorable photos of their children capturing the world as they see it.
This fantasy themed project has been a dream to create and shoot. I spent the time working on the set up for it and altering it here and there based on the clients I was working with.
When a child sees themselves in this immersive setting that they can now interact with, their innocence and sense of adventure naturally comes to life and I’m able to capture that with my camera not only the parents but also their children to cherish.
For me it is very important that the child is able to experience the set instead of editing the photos with too many components that weren't truly there originally. Which means that I wanted the set to feel as realistic as possible and allow for very organic posing and facial expressions. I created a pool with floral elements and different hues of blues and greens to look dreamy yet natural like a body of water one could find out in nature. I then added floral arrangements behind the pool of water to create depth and add contrast in color. Props such as mirrors are also used to add a more whimsical visual and, of course, some fairies may be added flying around after the fact.. Capturing magical images that celebrate the imagination and innocence of children while also acknowledging their dreams and stories.
While this style of photos works to represent the outstanding imagination of children, my goal is to also remind our adult selves that we once had this mindset too. It comes as a reminder to really look at the world around us and notice the little things we often take for mundane things. The way trees bloom and expand their branches to the sun, how animals communicate with one another, and all the places we once yearned to explore. I don’t believe that our talent for a grand imagination ceases to exist, but rather that we forget to dream once in a while and believe in magical places and fairytale-like moments. Though this project has mainly catered to children thus far, I am offering this to everyone who wishes to step into a fantasy setting and capture memorable photos of the places and beings we all once dreamed of. Let’s live a fairytale life.
